PERIODIC TRAINING
Effective 10 September 2009 all truck and bus drivers (2008) are required to take periodic training each year in order to be able to maintain the Code 95 on their driving licence (EU 2003/59 Directive). The periodic training comprises 35 hours training, 32.5 hours of which are theory and 2.5 hours driving in actual practice. The training must be completed within a period of 5 years in blocks of 7 hours per year. It has been determined that the first 35 hours of periodic training must be completed within a period of 7 years instead of 5 years. Bus drivers are required to complete the periodic training prior to 10 September 2015 and truck drivers prior to 10 September 2016, otherwise they are no longer permitted to exercise their profession.
Spending 7 hours in a classroom is quite a challenge for professional drivers. Green Dino’s e-learning course with its practice-oriented driving simulation limits the time spent in a classroom to 2.5 hours and makes the theory considerably more attractive and effective. Over a period of 10 days prior to the day of the course, the driver spends 5.5 hours on theory and driving simulations. During the day of the course, the drivers’ driving styles are reviewed and evaluated with the guidance of an instructor. This form of education has proven to be effective and has for several years been used in the professional training of police officers. By making use of driving simulations during the theoretical parts of the training, the driver is actively involved in traffic safety and practising efficient driving over a much longer period of time and its impact while on the road will be greater than when driving in actual practice is limited to a one-time period of 2.5 hours over 5 years. The individual results are stored and provide insight into the changes in the driver’s driving style over the years. Furthermore, business analyses are prepared that provide insight into the average performance of drivers and performance in relation to other transport companies, among other things.
